Stanton’s 2-run home run silenced the Dodgers fans briefly but with Nirvana playing on the loudspeaker and Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen, fans are back on their feet waving blue towels during the bottom of the sixth.
Game 5 world series 2024
Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty lasted just four outs, departing after Alex Verdugo’s RBI single in the second. In the third, Giancarlo Stanton homered for the seventh time this postseason — a Yankees record — to push the lead to five runs. Cole was cooking. The Yanks were in command.
Meanwhile, it’s the first World Series win for Los Angeles superstar Shohei Ohtani, the presumptive NL MVP, who signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers before the season. Ohtani had not appeared in the playoffs before this year. He deferred $680 million of his salary in part to help the franchise spend more around him.
10:10 p.m. — Edman starts things out with a liner to Verdugo who makes the catch. Cole earns his sixth strikeout of the night the next at-bat, getting Smith swinging on five pitches. Lux flies out to Soto to end Cole’s 1-2-3 inning, the score locked at two.
After a 60-game regular season, the Dodgers played four rounds of an expanded playoff format to win their first championship in more than 30 years. The entire series was held at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field, and Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager was named MVP after hitting .400 with two homers.
“I just wanted to look in Blake’s eyes. Blake’s our guy. Blake’s been our guy. I just wanted to slow the game down a little bit,” Roberts said in his postgame interview on Fox. “I looked in his eyes, I said, ‘how you feeling? How much more you got?’
Game 3 world series
Just a few pitches later, Anthony Volpe laced a line drive into left field, and it seemed like the Yankees were finally going to get on the board. However, a dart from Teoscar Hernandez beat a lumbering Stanton to home plate, and Stanton slid directly into the tag for the third out of the inning.
When Ohtani slid awkwardly into second base in the seventh inning of Game 2, it was clear that his left shoulder was in a lot of pain. The whole baseball world held its breath. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said his shoulder was “subluxated,” which the doctors on the Internet have told me is a partial dislocation – better than a total separation but still is not great.
Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda then took the mound and walked Anthony Rizzo on four pitches to put runners on first and second. Gleyber Torres was then called out on strikes after a final pitch from Banda that appeared to be well outside the zone. Torres was still shaking his head over home plate umpire Mark Carlson’s call while in the field in the eighth inning.
The Yankees bullpen has been worked hard so far this series, with seven relievers having worked at least two of the three games so far — Clay Holmes and Jake Cousins have thrown in all three. If Gil is unable to give the Yankees length, an already exposed bullpen will be burdened. Perhaps Marcus Stroman will be called upon for the first time this postseason.
